The Zag rug pattern was probably hooked in New England in the late 19th century. It has a Navajo rug look to it. Many Navajo rugs were sold to people traveling by train to California. In addition, the 'Germantown' Navajo rugs were made with dyes supplied by a company in Germantown, PA. Often dyes were bartered to the Navajos, with Navajo rugs as payment. Thus, the influx of Navajo style hooked rugs back east. These rugs, because of their simple, geometric nature, could be made almost any size and use whatever dyed fabrics were laying about.
